Memo from President Duane O'Neill

We Need Your Thoughts

This is your Chamber of Commerce. With that in mind, this Chamber needs your participation. On many occasions we ask for your financial support and at other times, we seek your presence at events. We always request that you be informed so that you may speak confidently about your Chamber and the activities in which we are involved.

Today we need your insight in helping us to set our priorities as we move into this New Year. Your Chamber leadership will soon be meeting to consider our direction for 2005. Their task will be made easier and much more productive if you, as our members, are part of the process.

The MetroJackson Chamber agenda is quite comprehensive. Over the past several years, we have placed major emphasis on Economic Development. This part of Chamber work involves working with existing businesses, recruiting new business and also workforce development. We have also focused our programs around Community Development- encompassing education, public safety, housing and building. Our goal is to continue creating and sustaining a healthy community by aggressively seeking improvements on issues relating to transportation and special projects such as Lefleur’s Lake.

Our Membership Services Division is constantly exploring additional tangible benefits for our members. Networking opportunities and access to affordable health care are just two examples of benefits provided exclusively to members.

Within your Chamber’s portfolio are many other important initiatives. However, it would be redundant to outline every program and I trust you are aware of most of our current activity. Perhaps you already have thoughts brewing and wish to share them as a result of this week’s column. We are keenly aware that our membership is our strongest asset. We work for you. So it just makes good sense to seek the wisdom of those who are in the marketplace and at the center of business and commerce in this MetroJackson community. Please share your opinions so that we can take a fresh look at our agenda for 2005.

In all these efforts it is crucial to remember that we are the “Metro” Chamber of Commerce. We are the organization that sees only one Metro community--- not restricted by political or jurisdictional lines. Think regionally in your responses. Our strength is in our diversity.

We will be anxiously awaiting your input. Please call Lindsay James at 948-7575 (email ljames@metrochamber.com) or email me directly (doneill@metrochamber.com)

Economic Development Update

The Benefits and Changes of MEDA

As most of you know, the MetroJackson Economic Development Alliance or MEDA for short is housed and facilitated by the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership ’s economic development department.  Since its inception in 1994 MEDA has grown from five founding entities to the nine we have today:  the City of Jackson, Copiah County Economic Development District, Entergy MS, Hinds County Economic Development District, Jackson Municipal Airport Authority, Madison County Economic Development Authority, Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership , RankinFirst Economic Development Authority and our 2005 addition of USDA, Rural Development.  These nine entities know how important it is that the Jackson Metro area must work together to recruit on a national and global basis.  Each member brings a separate strength to MEDA that has evolved this once lone marketing alliance to a nationally recognized regional alliance.

“Proactive instead of reactive” is the motto of MEDA in 2005.  Armed with studies, surveys and accolades from 2006, MEDA will step forward in establishing the Metro Jackson area as the place to do business in 2005.  Whether that be actively recruiting automotive suppliers from the north that are coming to the southeast for the first time; recruiting national/regional headquarters; or recruiting service, call, or data centers, MEDA will adjust to find the client’s most suitable needs.  All the MEDA partners are committed to making the Metro Jackson region the best place to live, work, and play.

MEDA is only as strong as its membership.  Looking into 2005, your feedback and thoughts are greatly appreciated.  What can MEDA do to better serve the Metro Jackson community and the state of Mississippi?  What would you like to see MEDA work on for 2005 to help your business grow and succeed?  Together we can continue not only to make our community grow stronger, but we can also prove to other nations what our great area has to offer.  Please send any feedback or questions to Ross Tucker, Vice President of Economic Development at (601) 948-7575 or e-mail rtucker@metrochamber.com.
